"We knew it was here, Miss"; so, said a Ugandan schoolgirl to me in 1968. And indeed, the Baganda and their forebears were well aware of a mighty river flowing north from what we know as Lake Victoria. Names like Speke, Burton and Stanley are intertwined with the European expeditions in search of the source of the White Nile in the 19th century. Local awareness does not detract from the intrepid adventures into Terra Incognita, nor the fitting together of those remarkable pieces of the jigsaw of knowledge of our planet. Some of those pieces were set in place in Ancient Egypt and Greece, and added to by Arab travellers on trade and slave routes from the coast of the Indian Ocean. Even a medieval map from 1154 holds a tantalising clue…
