Mon 28 July - 25 Aug ANCIENT ROME FROM FOUNDATION TO FALL c. 753 BCE - 476 CE
$50.00
The culture of the Western world is founded on Greco-Roman traditions, language, law, philosophy and much more. To travel to Europe, the Mediterranean, North Africa and the Middle East is to walk in the footsteps, and often on the roads, of the Romans. Even countries not actually absorbed into the Roman Empire were influenced by the Roman military proximity, trade and culture. During periods of revival of interest in the Classical world, such as the Italian Renaissance and 18th - 19th centuries, the connections with Ancient Rome were strengthened and carried round the world by European migration. From Washington DC to Oamaru, neo-classical buildings proudly proclaim their Greco-Roman heritage. This course offers an introductory overview from the foundation of Rome, through its remarkable and remorseless expansion as republic and empire, to the separation of the eastern and western empires and the fall of Rome to Germanic tribes in the 5th century.
