The six Lymond Chronicles by Scottish author Dorothy Dunnett and set in various places in mid-16th century Europe, were the subject of a course in Term 2 2021. Dunnett made mid-15th century Renaissance Europe the backdrop for her next series of historical novels following the career and adventures of Nicholas de Fleury (also known as Niccolò, Nicholas van der Poele, or Claes). This term we will discuss the first four novels and follow some of the exploits of Niccolò from 1460 in Bruges through to 1467, including historical events in the Black Sea region, Cyprus, Italy, Portugal, and Madeira, and connecting as a 'jigsaw piece' to the legendary gold of Mali and the city of Timbuktu.
