Today many visit this Greek island to enjoy its beaches, landscape and wineries, explore the archaeological sites and museums, and perhaps to pay their respects to the fallen of 20th-century conflict. Crete is a name well-known from the Minoan civilisation of the Bronze Age, through many centuries of commercial and cultural interchange within the classical and Mediterranean world, down to the Second World War,where Crete's history engages with that of New Zealand.
These two sessions will offer an overview of several millennia of history, with focus on some significant events.
