The historical figure of King Alfred the Great of Wessex has been an inspiration to the English for over 11 centuries. During his reign from 871 to 899, Alfred defended his Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex against Danish Viking attack on land and sea. His creation of the first English navy and a 'ready-reaction force' of militia, as well as the construction of border fortresses displayed innovative leadership. Through his love of learning Alfred encouraged a spiritual and literary revival, which included the writing of English vernacular prose. The series will explore many places in Wessex associated with Alfred's life and legends, including his capital city of Winchester.
