29 Jan-26 Feb 2014 ROLLO THE VIKING AND THE FOUNDATION OF NORMANDY AD 911
$50.00
The widespread mayhem caused by the fearsome, seafaring Northmen throughout the ninth century was so devastating that kings resorted to appeasement and payment of protection money or Danegeld. Land grants were also negotiated to reduce the risk of further aggression - in England, the Danelaw was established in 886, and Rollo the Viking undertook to prevent further Viking attacks on Paris by holding the lower reaches of the River Seine in what came to be known as Normandy. This arrangement of 911 had far-reaching consequences for both France and England.
