The Iberian Peninsula has been home to many peoples over time, from prehistoric cave-dwellers, and builders of megaliths, to Basque and Celtic tribes, and Roman conquerors and colonists in Hispania. Germanic and Moorish invaders in turn settled and contributed to the rich and colourful cultures of Iberia, while the Christian kingdoms to the north attracted pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela, and crusading knights in their relentless Reconquest and reunification of Spain, finally achieved by Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castille in 1492.
