The history of China is lengthy, vast, complex, breathtakingly impressive and most worthy of study. China has been a significant actor in the human story and on the global stage for thousands of years. There are innumerable facets of Chinese history that are specialist areas of research, but there is also a place for an overview and introduction to this expansive history that allows the European 'outsider' to become aware of the timeline, context, events and key characters in the story of China. In the 21st century, China has re-emerged as a global mover and shaker; it behoves us all to seek to understand the Chinese world view, history and culture. This short introductory series will highlight this ancient culture from the Bronze Age, through the consolidation of China under the Kingdom of Qin, to the emergence of the Mongol Empire, and provide the foundation for future courses on Chinese history.
