BARRHILL, ASHBURTON HERITAGE CENTRE AND PLAINS RAILWAY MUSEUM
$60.00
This full-day bus tour is being run in conjunction with the Canterbury History Foundation.
Participants will meet at the University of Canterbury and travel by coach via the Rakaia Gorge to Barrhill historic village, founded in the early 1870s. We will then cross the Canterbury Plains to visit the new heritage centre in Ashburton with interesting and informative displays covering early Māori, colonial and 20th-century history of mid-Canterbury. Museum staff will give a talk on key aspects of the displays and identify some distinctive domestic architecture in neighbouring streets. The Plains Railway Museum will be our final visit with the opportunity to enjoy a steam train ride on a 'K'88 before returning to Christchurch.
